This design and build waste transfer station is capable of achieving a throughput of approximately 100,000 tonnes per annum. We undertook works to demolish the existing buildings including existing offices in a controlled manner. The existing concrete slabs and foundations were broken out and earthworks and site clearance completed. New drainage was installed including containment and attenuation and new ducting and cabling installed for power, lighting and new alarm system. Internal haul roads were created reflecting the new site layout and set up and concrete hardstanding constructed. The new waste transfer station was constructed using a steel frame and cladding system and was fitted with a water fed fire suppression system and associated 1km rising main, pumping station, pump house and MCC kiosk. A bund was constructed to retain contaminated water should the fire suppression system be used. The building was also fitted with a ventilation and odour control system. These works were successfully completed while the site remained operational and worked with Yorwaste to agree a mutually beneficial construction sequence which minimised impact to operations.
