Client

This project involved the reconstruction and upgrade of the car park and access road at a fully operational Special Educational Needs (SEN) school. All works were delivered while the school remained open, with safety and accessibility as top priorities.

Project Scope

The works included the reconstruction of the existing tarmac carriageway and footpaths, integrating them into a secure outdoor play area for pupils. Key elements of the project included:

  • New kerblines and kerb raft installations
  • Installation of 26 bollards
  • Ducting installed for new street lighting
  • Construction of a concrete pad and close-boarded bin store
  • Foul and surface water drainage, including ACO channels and gullies
  • 315m² Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) rainwater garden
  • 165m of 1.3m-high fencing and matching gates
  • 160m of 1.8m-high fencing and matching gates
  • 110m² wildflower meadow and 70m of native hedging
  • Tree and shrub planting and grass seeding
Design Review & Construction

A detailed design review identified issues with levels, accessibility, and fire escape routes. In collaboration with the Council, gradients were adjusted, a compliant ramp system was installed, and fencing was altered to maintain full fire door access.

Before excavation, CAT and Genny surveys and trial pits were completed to locate underground services. New foul and surface water drainage systems were then installed and connected to existing infrastructure and the SUDS rainwater garden. Once drainage works were complete, new surfacing was laid to the carriageways, car park, and footpaths.

The project was completed with the installation of fencing, gates, bollards, bin store facilities, and landscaping. The SUDS rainwater garden helps reduce surface water runoff, improve drainage, and enhance biodiversity through layered soils and wildflower planting.

Challenges Overcome

The works were delivered within a live school environment. All construction activities were safely segregated from pupils and staff. Vehicle movements and noisy works were planned outside key school hours. Secure fencing, daily inspections, and environmental controls helped minimise dust and noise.

Added Value

Close coordination with the Council and school ensured clear communication and minimal disruption. The project was delivered on time and within budget, with seasonal planting programmed appropriately. High standards of health, safety, and environmental management were maintained throughout.
