Project Description:
The works involved the restoration of Sunniside Gardens in the centre of the city of Sunderland including the replacement of surface materials and street furniture, landscaping works to the gardens, removal and planting of trees, installation of a water feature, diversion of services and installation of artwork, creating a unique feature to this historic part of the city.
Construction in the city centre had an immediate impact on residents and businesses fronting the works and a knock on effect to the wider public arising from traffic diversions, disruptions and the movement of materials. Particular attention was paid to liaison with the local community and businesses to ensure that any special needs were taken into account and care taken to ensure that construction activity had the minimum of impact on the local environment.
This urban regeneration scheme is in the historic setting of the upper Saltburn promenade.
